Would i be able to tell if it's a rat and not a squirrel in my house?

we keep hearing noises at night and they have been going in my cereal cupboard where we have find it has been eating it. we have put bait down for the last four nights and it has eat it but the noises are getting worse.Would i be able to tell if it's a rat and not a squirrel in my house?
In a cupboard, I would guess a rat. Squirrels wouldn't come into the house and end up in the cupboard. That's the domain of the nasty old rat! And if the noises are getting worse, it's probable that there's a nest with more than one. Get a pest exterminator for this.Would i be able to tell if it's a rat and not a squirrel in my house?
If you saw it yes. Also, I don't think a squirrel could have opened the door.
A good way to find out is to actually trap the animal with a humane trap one is a common ';coon trap' which can easily be purchased a tractor supply or wal-mart for $20-40. If you are able to catch it you can do spot identification and tell weather it is a rat or squirrel by its tail; squirrels have a thick furry looking tail while rats have skinny bare tail.

hope it helps
Only flying squirrels are nocturnal and I doubt you have a flying squirrel. Rats and mice ARE nocturnal. There is an adage about rats: ';See one, count 10';. For every one you see, there are 10 that you don't.
