Every time I put bird seed out in the yard, the squirrels get to it. What's the one thing they take take after they knock all of it on the ground? Sunflower seeds. It's the only things they eat in the bird seed. There isn't one sunflower seed left afterwards, only the shells. Try sunflower seeds.What is a good squirrel bait that can be found around the house?
Squirrels love bread or crackers.

Potato chips. The oilier the better. No Pringles! They'll run up your pants leg and nibble on you if you try to pass them stinking stale Pringles!
Tater chips have the fried tater smell that *ALL* animals love....they're fried in nut oils that they can't resist....and they have salt, which all animals crave.
Good old Lays potato chips are also one of the best bear baits there are, too. Learned that one by accident on the App Trail back in the 70's.
Find a grove of big old oaks. Go out quietly just before first light and set up at the base of one of the trees that you have scouted. Just after first light when the woods becomes alive....

Go to the nearest feed store and buy some ears of hard corn. Drill holes into the ends of the cobs that the heads of 16d nails will fit into. Drive some 16d nails into the tops of fence posts and press the ears of corn onto the nails. The squirrels will come to the corn. DO NOT drive nails into the trees. That is a good way to loose your hunting privaleges. Annother good attractant is peanuts in the shells. Many grocery stores sell peanuts in the shells in bulk. Do not use the salted nuts. Then you have to make a wooden box with a hinged top to put the nuts into. The hinged top will keep birds out of the nuts but squirrels are pretty smart and will quickly figure out how to get into the box and get the nuts. They are also attracted to peanut butter but it can be messy to work with. Once for the heck of it, I bought a big jar of cheap peanut butter at Sam's Club, opened the jar and sat it into the peanut box to see what they would do. They ate all of the peanut better but made a mess all over and around the box.
Anything that you would feed to wild birds. Seed,bread,etc.
Birdseed, those nutty squirrels love bird food, also get some chees doodles, they like them too.

In Missouri black walnuts is the bait to use. Or just hunt in a walnut grove and don't worry about the bait. In town I would agree with the salty potato chips. They will eat them fast and their meat is already well preserved with the salt when you cook them. LOL
